Mathijs van Basten Batenburg is a general corporate counsel with over 15 years experience assisting international companies with their legal and practical business affairs.
Although he started his career as a Dutch attorney, Mathijs has since specialized in helping international small and medium sized enterprises to manage their legal risks and being a sparring partner for management.
Originally from The Netherlands, Mathijs has lived the majority of his working life in Asia and is accustomed to the challenges of doing business in jurisdictions where the rule of law is not a given. This often translates into a highly 'common-sense based' approach to the environment encountered in such countries.
Typical work for clients entails analysing legal matters, drafting and perusing contracts and other documentation, liaising with attorneys around the world and managing the legal side of projects (e.g. M&A, litigation, intellectual property strategy, structuring). Mathijs has a strong background in corporate, contract and intellectual property law.
Many companies that operate in an international setting appreciate the option to discuss (legal) strategy with a person that can take the role of general counsel, without having to employ such person full-time. Mathijs takes this role on a part-time or incidental basis and - when a matter requires specialized legal knowledge - helps to find an appropriate attorney for more complex or jurisdiction specific issues.
